London is one of my favorite cities. It feels like New York but smaller, older, and cozier. I love it. The city’s charm, historic streets, and friendly people make it a must-visit destination. However, like any travel experience, mistakes can happen. During my trip, we made a few mistakes that I want to share, so you can avoid them when you explore London. Here’s my guide to what not to do in London.
1. Not Booking Restaurant Reservations in Advance
Finding a place to eat in London can be a challenge, especially at popular spots. Many restaurants require reservations, and we were turned away more than once because we didn’t book ahead. While walk-ins are possible, popular dining spots fill up quickly.
Tip: If you’re a foodie or want to dine at specific places, book your restaurant reservations before your trip. Research the neighborhoods you’ll be visiting to find great restaurants nearby and check if they require bookings.
Restaurant Recommendations in London:
- The 411: A New York-themed bar in Angel with American cuisine and a unique stock exchange night on Wednesdays where drink prices fluctuate based on demand. Reservations are a must.
- Mercato Mayfair: A beautiful food hall with diverse dining options.
- The Mayfair Chippy: A classic spot for traditional British fish and chips.
- Din Tai Fung (Centre Point): Famous for its xiaolongbao (soup dumplings).
- Jacuzzi: Italian dining with a fun, vibrant atmosphere.
2. Overhyping Portobello Road Market
We were excited to visit Notting Hill and explore the famous Portobello Road Market, but it didn’t live up to our expectations. While there are shops and market stalls, the area felt overly touristy and crowded. We found ourselves wishing we had explored other parts of London instead.
Instead of Portobello Road, I recommend spending time in Kensington, which became one of my favorite neighborhoods in London. With its beautiful architecture, high-end shops, and proximity to Hyde Park, it’s a perfect spot for a peaceful morning or afternoon walk.
Things to Do in Kensington Instead:
- Walk or bike through Kensington Gardens.
- Visit Kensington Palace and learn about British royalty.
- Explore the Natural History Museum (free entry).
- Stop for a coffee at Cafe Jumo.
3. Waiting to Buy Broadway Show Tickets
London’s West End is an amazing theater district, and missing a show is a regret you don’t want. I planned to see the musical Six, but by the time I went to buy tickets, they were sold out. I was so sad. Don’t make the same mistake—BUY YOUR TICKETS EARLY! I now have to plan another trip back or go see Six in New York. Not mad about planning another trip but sad about missing it in London.
If you’re unsure which show to see, I recommend using TodayTix to browse options and purchase tickets well in advance. While there’s always the option of checking the TKTS booth in Leicester Square for same-day deals, it’s better to book ahead to avoid disappointment.
Tips for Booking West End Show Tickets:
- Use TodayTix to secure tickets early.
- Plan your itinerary and decide which night you want to see a show.
- Don’t wait until you arrive in London to book!
